Texas Whitelist Alert: Texas Parks & Wildlife Dept - Aquatic Plant Whitelist seminar San Angelo Convention Ctr 500 Rio Concho Dr on Fri 9/17 from 2-3pm open to the public. TPWD has been directed by the Texas Legislature through House Bill 3391 to publish a list of exotic aquatic plants, including algae, (ie., all non native aquatic species), which are approved for importation or possession in Texas without a permit. TPWD has been charged with compiling and finalizing this list by December 31, 2010. They must also develop rules for procedures for adding exotic aquatic plants to the approved list in the future.
If you have plants in your water garden you will want to be at this meeting. If they are not on this list when it goes into effect Jan 2011 they will be illegal. Dr Earl Chilton II, director of TPWD's Aquatic Habitat Enforcement Program explains how it will be monitored, how it will effect businesses & hobbyists, and how new plants can be added to the list. Currently only 19 waterlilies are on a draft of the list done in June. Go to this site to see the proposed list. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/business/feedback/public_comment/proposals/exotic_aquatic_plants/
S.A.P.S. is a group of dedicated hobbyists helping other hobbyists learn and promote the art of water gardening and keeping koi.
It is alot easier to learn from those who have experience than trying to go it alone. Some of us have learned the hard way
and we may be able to keep you from making costly mistakes. We want to share our knowledge, to guide those who are just starting out, to learn from each other, so we can all enjoy
this wonderful hobby to the utmost.
